De Kunst van het Wortelschieten

De titel De Kunst van het Wortelschieten is een titel die iets spreekwoordelijks heeft. Het lastige van Nederlandse spreekwoordelijke-achtige titels is dat ze moeilijk in het engels te vertalen zijn. Maar persoonlijk vind ik dat altijd wel een uitdaging. Door deze titel letterlijk in het engels te vertalen krijgt het een extra laag. Alsof er een soort van ‘vaardigheid’ bij betrokken is. The Art of Shooting a Carrot. Het woord shooting krijg hier iets van de welbekende term photoshooting in de zin van photoshooting a carrot. Maar ik hoef hier natuurlijk niet uit te leggen dat het eigenlijk gaat over het aarden in het aardse bestaan, het landen op aarde. En dat je pas kunt landen als je hebt gevlogen.

[ The Art of Shooting a Carrot – The title The Art of Shooting a Carrot is a title that has something proverbial about it. The tricky thing about Dutch proverbial-like titles is that they are difficult to translate into English. But personally, I always find that challenging. Translating this title literally into English gives it an extra layer. As if there is some kind of “skill” involved. The Art of Shooting a Carrot. The word shooting here gets something of the well-known term photoshooting in the sense of photoshooting a carrot. But of course I don’t need to explain here that it is actually about grounding in earthly existence, landing on earth. And that you cannot land until you have flown’. ]
