Dit is de mooiste schrikreactie die je maar kunt hebben van een vogel als de flits afgaat. Dat klinkt een beetje dieronvriendelijk maar de vogels worden goed ‘betaald’ door de overvloedige hoeveelheden wormen die ze worden aangeboden. En daarbij…hoe erg is de schrik als je na 15 seconden alweer een worm wilt scoren?
Het beeld bestaat uit een soort van retro-fifties kaartenhouder die ik heb gevonden bij de kringloop. Veel van mijn objecten haal ik daar vandaan. In dit specifieke geval trof mij de abstracte cirkelvormige vormen van het draadmodel. Ik moest meteen denken aan het werk van Robert Mangold en de minimale schilderkunst. Ik houd daarvan, ook al mag het tegenwoordig eigenlijk niet meer van de anti-modernisten. Maar afijn, de vogel voegt zich perfect naar de lijnen van het beeld omdat hij zich ‘doodschrikt’. Zou dit een ethische dimensie toevoegen aan mijn vogelfotografie? Ik weet wel dat ik ooit bijna bij Vroege Vogels mocht komen maar zij waren toch een beetje bang van mijn wormen die ik gebruik om de vogels te lokken. Blijkbaar zijn vogels ook onderhevig aan de huidige tijdgeest waarin alles snel onder een vergrootglas komt te liggen.

It sounds a bit animal-unfriendly but the birds are “paid well” by the copious amounts of worms offered to them. And besides…how bad is the scare when they want to score another worm after only 15 seconds?
The sculpture consists of a kind of retro-fifties card holder I found at the thrift store. I get many of my objects from there. In this particular case, the abstract circular shapes of the wire model struck me. I was immediately reminded of Robert Mangold’s work and minimal painting. I love that, even though the anti-modernists don’t really allow it these days. But afine, the bird blends perfectly into the lines of the image as it ‘scares itself to death’. Would this add a ethical dimension to my bird photography. I do know that I was once almost allowed to join Early Birds (Dutch podcast) but they were still a bit scared of my worms that I use to lure the birds. Apparently birds are also subject to the current zeitgeist where everything quickly comes under a magnifying glass. ]
